Introduction to the Programme

Regent is offering a pathway into the exciting world of Horticulture and landscaping with a two year Level 5 Diploma in Horticulture – specializing in creative landscaping. This qualification is approved and credited by the NZ Qualifications Authority. You will develop a solid grounding in plant selection, garden design and site planning. You will learn from landscape design experts that will assist you with essential skills in your ultimate career goals.

A strong focus on design and drawing skills sets this Diploma apart from other landscape design qualifications. Develop your creativity and experience in landscape design and construction, and further your knowledge to select plants for your designs.

With the in-depth plant knowledge and grounding in management that you will gain employers will be assured that you have the necessary skills to excel in the field of landscape design.

Aim of the Course

The aim of the course is to provide a pre-employment qualification for students and provide them with generic and specific skills that will prepare them for employment in the horticulture industry

Qualifications Gained

As part of this overall Diploma programme, you will be awarded the following three qualifications:

  • Diploma in Horticulture (Level 5) with a major in Landscaping
  • National Certificate in Horticulture (Landscaping) (Level 4)
  • National Certificate in Horticulture (Introductory) (Level 2)

About The Programme

This is a two academic year programme comprising 231 credits from the NZ National Qualifications Framework.70 teaching weeks (excluding holiday)

You will study:

  • Site Planning
  • Draughting for Plans
  • Garden Design
  • Plant Selection
  • Agricultural and Horticultural Science
  • Amenity Horticulture
  • Production Horticulture
  • Landscaping and Propagation Techniques
  • Landscape construction

There will be a blend of theory, creative design and practical on-site utilisation of your knowledge and creativity.

With the excellent facilities and technology available through Regent, you will gain a wide range of skills and knowledge in the horticultural and landscaping fields. Field trips and work experience opportunities are included in the programme.

By the end of the programme you will be well-equipped to become a sought after employee in the horticulture industry.

Course Duration

Two Academic year (six semesters)

Entry Requirements

You must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Be able to demonstrate you have the attitudes and attributes to work and study at the level required for the Diploma. This attribute will be assessed through an interview process;
  • Be 18 years old and capable of completing the practical aspects of the programme (as 60% of the total programme is practical);
  • Have an IELTS score of 5.5 or sit Regent’s English Entry Test.
  • Have completed a minimum of 10 years of formal schooling.
  • Applicants may be interviewed.

Content Statement

The Diploma in Horticulture (Level 5) is made up of the two National Qualifications plus additional unit standards:

The National Certificate in Horticulture (Introductory) Level 2(forms the first 22 weeks of the full time programme. All students study 3 subject areas:

1. Introduction to Landscaping

2. Plants & soils in Landscaping

3. Communication skills

The National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) with Strand in Landscape forms the latter 18 weeks of the first year of the full time programme.

All students study 4 subject areas.

1. Plants and soils in landscaping

2. Communication skills

3. Documents relation

4. Non plant landscaping materials

At the start of the second year of the programme the student may chose one of the following stands:

  • Landscape Design Strand
  • Landscape Development & Maintenance Strand

New Zealand is desperately short of people with Horticultural skills and graduates have excellent prospects for employment and New Zealand Permanent Residency.
Horticulture is on the New Zealand Immigration Long Term Skill Shortage list. The course met with the Qualification Requirements of Immigration under Skills Migrant Categories.
